What should I check out Tad??
Image has a few really good titles, Paul. There are a couple of trades I would grab to see if you want to continue reading.
The Walking Dead--Robert Kirkman's awesome zombie comic. I'm not sure if you've been watching the AMC TV show of this, but if you have, the comic is totally different and well worth reading. They intentionally set them both to do similar, but different plots and characters, etc.
Chew--It's a world where chicken is illegal because of a global bird flu pandemic that killed millions, so the FDA us like FBI badasses. The main character is Tony Chu, and he's a "cibopath," which means he's psychic based on what he eats. So if he eats an orange, he sees the tree it was grown on, the guy that picked it, etc. So to solve crimes, he occasionally has to eat some "interesting" stuff to get a lead off it. REALLY well written, and the art is a very cool and unique style. It's funny, and compelling. Just a great book.
Morning Glories-- Before I started reading this, it was described to me as the "Lost" of comics. That's the best description I've heard for it. It's a group of teens that ends up at the Morning Glories Academy, but it's just a giant mind freak. Crazy mysteries, cool characters, murder, weird crap like time travel. Just an awesome book. I've heard rumors that it's designed to go #100 issues, and that the story is all mapped out, so hopefully there won't be the big letdown like "Lost"
For all of these, I would suggest jut getting Volume 1's of their trades when you fell like it, and getting a good taste of the story.
There are lots of other good Image titles, too, but there are my personal standouts.
Invincible-- This is a Robert Kirkman super-hero book, but I've never read it. Everyone tells me I'm missing out, though.
Thief of Thieves--IT's just one issue in, but it's a really cool Oceans 11 style crime book by the guys that do Walking Dead and MOrning Glories
Xenoholics--It's a fun book centered around a support group for Alien Abduction survivors.I like this one.
The Strange Talent of Luther Strode--It's a cool mini series about a nerd that buys one of those "get muscles fast" kits from a comic book, but it ends up really working and he can tear you're freaking face off.
Blue Estate-- It's a really cool and different crime book. Not to be cliche, but it's kind of like Pulp Fiction with a bunch of different characters that all seem to intertwine. There's mobsters, actresses, private detectives. Just a weird, enjoyable book.
That's all I can think of for now. The thing with Image, too, is that they publish a lot of cool off-the-wall mini-series, so it's easy to get in and out of a book and get the whole story in just a few issues. I kind of like that.
I'm sure there are TONS more that I haven't read, but this is a good start.
