There's lots of really cool titles out there that don't fall under any of the "Major" publishers.

My Independent Comics Picks Of The Week for 2/22/12:

Antarctic Press: Nazi Zombies #1--Dude. It's Nazis. That are zombies. Don't over think it and just enjoy the flesh-eating Nazi awesomeness.

IDW: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7-- Growing up on a healthy regimen of turtles in ninja format, I was skeptical when this new title hit the shelves. But I bought #1 and never looked back. It's good. It's fun. It's freaking Ninja Turtles!! This ish sheds a little light on Krang's plan and how it relates to Splinter and the gang.

What Indie books did you flip a lid for this week?

The Boys!!!!! It's so damn good. It's all in trade paperback form too, so it's easy to grab the first volume and give it a shot. The basic premise is that superheroes are essentially the result of a particular corporation. And The Boys are the kind of black ops, CIA team that's in charge of keeping them in line. But it's SO GOOD. Not at all what you would think. The superheroes are total d-bags in general, there's all kinds of corporate and government corruption. Sex, murder, more sex, cursing, sex, people getting their arms ripped off, sex, death, a crazy mute asian chick that will eat your face off if you cross her, and sex.

I can't say enough. It was one that was recommended to me, and I begrudgingly gave the first trade a shot. Now I went back and have every issue, and am tracking down a handful of variant covers to try and complete my set. It ends in seven more issues, too, so it won't be one of those long drawn out stories. But I'm sad about that. I love it.

Ahem...anyway.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles--It's good. It's Eastman doing it, too, so it's not some hack trying to do the TMNT franchise. IDW Puts this out.

Ghostbusters--Another fun one. Not too complicated. Fun tongue-in-cheek humor like the movies. I like this one.

Bionic Man--I think a lot of people don't like this one. But I do. It's Kevin Smith's take on it, and I think it's really well written.

That's all I can think of for now.

Ooh. Thought of another one.

Crossed--The original is done by Garth Ennis and it's totally rad. Well let me back up. It's probably the most disgusting, gruesome, horrific comics in history. So yeah, it's rad. Imagine a kind of Zombie Plague, but instead of turning into mindless, limping, brain eaters, people turn into thinking, uninhibited, cannibalistic, monsters. For example, a zombie will shuffle slowly towards you from the middle of the street. a Crossed would sneak up on you, jump out of nowhere, tear off your arm (or other appendage), stuff it down your throat, have sex with your corpse, and then make a loin cloth out of your face skin.

It's freaking crazy. But not for the faint of heart. There have been lots of mini-series spinoffs, but the first one by Ennis is still the best.
