PostSubject: Copper Age   Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:58 pm

Hey guys I had a question that I thought you might know the answer to. I have seen in places an age called the Copper age. Is this a recognized age or is it more an unofficial construct Question Thanks for any light you can shed on this subject

I really didn't know anything about it, but I was able to find this on the Marvel Wiki;

Seemingly a newly-erected category, its borders are not sharply defined. The only definitive statement that can be made is its between the Bronze-Age and the Modern age of comics. At least one site implicates "Batman:The Dark Knight Returns" and "Watchmen" as being the beginning of the Copper-Age. The 1984 date can be justified due to "Crisis on Infinite Earths". However, I have yet to see two dating schemes agree. The following estimates of its duration have been found:
1982-199? Implication of Overstreet PG 2006's cover gallery. Note that a 1982 cover is associated with Copper, while a 1983 cover is associated with Bronze. OPG doesn't explicitly define the age.
1984-1992 http://www.boneville.com/2006/09/09/comics-pop-culture-museum-opens-in-baltimore-md/
1986-? implication of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_comic_book from Modern Age description
What's not subject to dispute is that this era is distinct from the speculator's market of the early 90s. It is marked by a proliferation of Indie publishers, especially in black and white formats.
The formation of Image could be said to end the Copper Age.

So it appears that it's not really a "legit" age, with so much speculation and differences on dates.

Although it seems like it should be it's own category, to differentiate it from when all the crazy comic boom happened in the early 90's with Image, Valiant, etc.

I don't think I helped at all, did I? affraid

My research came up about the same Tad. For me it's best ignored. I go with the more common "ages" Golden Age 1938-1950, Silver Age 1956-1970, Bronze Age 1970-1985, Modern Age 1985-Present. I think the "Copper Age" is put forward by people who want to feel like they are part of a "special" generation. Like how people brag about being a "Generation Xr" or a "Baby Boomer". They need a label to feel special.

To me, Copper Age would be anything from 1986 to 1999. That was the era that comics took a nose dive of popularity. Beginning with 2000, comics made a comeback. But its like with SW, no one can define when the vintages stopped and the modern began. Some say 85, I lean to 87 with the 10th Anniversary.

That's some interesting stuff. It seems like the definition varies from place to place. I wonder if it will ever become an official age?

I would think that it won't. Especially since it's been so long since the "Copper Age" should have ended. It's interesting, though, but I'm glad that the only "ages" signify major changes in comic books, like size, or a major hero's appearance, etc.

But I also noticed that e-bay lists in as a category in the Comics section. ANd they say it's from 1984-1991.

That makes sense Tad it has been a long time since it ended. It's interesting that ebay recognizes it. I know some of the auction houses do too but I can't remember which ones they were.

Thank you for the information about the copper age of comics, I have herd of it before but I myself have never used it and TBH I will probably not do so in the future unless it becomes an industry standard.

I just looked at my one online seller and all they use is golden, silver and modern. It might catch on when more people start using it, but I dont see it in the near futrue. Once they can establish what year it actually ends, then maybe. Until then I dont see it happening.
